EVENT Benefit to name Houston's Iron Sommelier

Houston’s best sommeliers will battle it out on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa. The big event, which benefits the Periwinkle Foundation, will begin at 6 p.m.

Those vying for the title of Iron Sommelier are Jason Sherman of Brennan’s of Houston; Ron Brandani of Carrabba’s Kirby; Evan Turner of Helen: Greek Food & Wine; Kevin Kenyon of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa; Cathy Nguyen of Mark*s American Cuisine; Steven McDonald of Pappas Bros. Steakhouse; Christian Varas of River Oaks Country Club; Adele Corrigan of 13 celsius wine bar; and James Watkins of America’s and Churrasco’s

The competing sommeliers will focus of on particular wine regions, types of grapes and style. Each competitor will be rated by a panel of judges on wine choice, presentation, creativity and knowledge of the wine selections.

The festive evening includes wine, food, a big board auction, a children's art sale and live entertainment.

Individual tickets are $150. There is also an Aficionado Package, priced at $1,000; it includes two tickets and a case of hand-selected wine by Ben Roberts, the 2012 Iron Sommelier winner. Roberts will also be providing accompanying tasting notes to all purchasers. Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities start at $2,500 and are still available.

The Periwinkle Foundations is a non-profit organization that works to enrich the lives of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing opportunities for camping, recreational, art and creative writing programs. More than 4,000 children each year are touched by Periwinkle programs such as Camp Periwinkle, Camp YOLO, Family Camp, the Long Term Survivor Program and the Arts and Creative Writing Program. Funds raised through the Iron Sommelier benefit help support these Periwinkle programs throughout the year.
